Seven Mental Health Facts You Need to Know

In honor of World Mental Health Day coming up this month, we’ve compiled a list of important facts to help you or a loved one better understand mental health issues.

Mental health covers a large spectrum of psychological and emotional well-being, which may affect how you think, feel, and act as you carry yourself through the day.

Mental health disorders can range from ADHD and eating disorders to bipolar disease and schizophrenia, to name a few. Check out some key facts below to better understand mental health disorders.

One in five young people has gone through a period of depression.

A large number of youth, ages 18 and under, suffer from mental health disorders in the United States. That’s why you should always monitor your child for any symptoms. Find out if your child is at risk by checking to see if they show any of these six main signs of depression.

Mental health issues are connected to physical health.

These two subjects are often thought of as separate, but they actually are linked. Studies show that mental health issues are highly related to many stages of health conditions like diabetes, stroke, heart disease, hypertension, and cancer.

Chronic diseases like these are proven to increase mental health symptoms that can often create a poor health cycle.

Each mental health disorder has unique symptoms and signs.

Signs of mental health issues can range from changes in personality and in eating or sleeping patterns, to high anxiety, substance abuse, and many more. Managing stress can be a helpful way to cope with a disorder, but be sure to talk to your doctor if you have any symptoms.

Depression is the leading cause in mental health disorders worldwide.

Depression is the most common mental health disorder, and it’s a large contributor to disease globally. This mental disorder is not to be confused with feeling down, which may happen to everyone from time to time. Symptoms of depression are often more severe, and could include low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, poor concentration, low energy, and more.

50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness start at age 14, and 75% at age 24.

A large majority of mental illness begins as early as age 14 and 24, with anxiety disorders, depression, and substance abuse being among the three most common for younger ages.

More than 12 million young people in the U.S. will have a mental health disorder in a given year.

That number is greater than the populations of NYC and Los Angeles combined. Mental health disorders affect a large population, so know that you or a loved one is not alone.

78% of adults suffering from mental health symptoms agreed that treatment can help them lead normal lives.

Effective treatment options are essential to managing mental health disorders. Most Americans find that treatment is important to reduce stigmas and give those suffering from mental illness positive results.
