Creating a safe and comfortable environment to help your baby sleep is important for his or her health. It can even save your baby’s life!

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is a medical condition that causes the unexplained deaths of babies, usually during sleep. SIDS affects thousands of infants every year and can occur in children up to one year of age.

SIDS is unpredictable, but you can take steps to help protect your baby from it and other dangers during sleep. Click on the image below to learn how.

More Ways to Reduce the Risk of SIDS

You can help prevent SIDS and reduce risks of strangulation and suffocation by:

  • Never allowing anyone (yourself included) to smoke or use illegal drugs around your baby, near your bed, in your home, or anywhere your baby sleeps
  • Making sure that products you use for your baby—including cribs, toys, and clothing—meet the safety guidelines of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
  • Taking your child to regular well-child visits with his or her pediatrician or healthcare provider and getting recommended vaccines
  • Giving your baby “tummy time” every day to help him or her build strength and improve motor development

If you are a new or expecting mother, get regular healthcare during and after pregnancy. Never smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs during pregnancy or after your baby is born. Never share your bed with your baby if you are a smoker, smoked during pregnancy, have been drinking alcohol, or have taken any prescription or illegal drugs that make it hard for you to wake up.

Breastfeeding can also help protect your baby from SIDS. Find out more now about what you should feed your baby and when!
