Four Free Obamacare Services You Should Get

Do you know what tests and services you have the right to get under Obamacare? Find out more about the tests that can keep you healthy.

No matter what health insurance plan you have, you’re covered for these preventive care tests and services under the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare.” Even if you haven’t met your yearly deductible, you don’t have to pay a co-payment or coinsurance when these services are delivered by your primary doctor.

Most of the tests are fast and easy. Plus, if you know your results, you have a better chance at managing your health.

Which ones do you still need?

Blood Pressure Screening

Did you know that high blood pressure , or hypertension, can have no warning signs but still lead to a heart attack or stroke?

Your doctor can check your blood pressure using a sphygmomanometer, a device with an inflatable band that wraps around your arm. It’s easy and painless; you may just feel a little squeeze! This device will return two numbers: your systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number) blood pressure.

Your doctor will discuss your results and what they mean with you at your appointment. He/she will tell you if you need to take medicine or make other changes to keep your blood pressure at a healthy level.

Cholesterol Screening

Cholesterol is a type of fat found in your blood. When your cholesterol level is high, it increases your risk for heart attacks and strokes.

Your doctor can give you a blood test to determine your LDL (“bad cholesterol”) number and your HDL (“good cholesterol”) number. When your doctor gives you your overall cholesterol number—for example, 200—it is the amount of LDL and HDL cholesterol in your blood combined.

If your doctor has diagnosed you with high cholesterol, he or she can give you the steps to manage this condition. Test your knowledge on cholesterol here.

One of the most important ways to stay healthy is to avoid illnesses that can spread quickly—such as the flu, measles, mumps, hepatitis A and B, and more.

Vaccines, also called immunizations, help prevent these serious and sometimes life-threatening diseases by defending your immune system. Vaccines are very important for children, especially when they go to daycare or school. Some vaccines begin at birth and are continued all the way through age 18 or older. And, some vaccines require more than one dose.

What vaccines you get—and when—depends on your age and previous vaccine schedule. To find out which ones you or your child might need, talk to your doctor today.

Certain Cancer Screenings

The best way to fight cancer is to catch it early. If you’re at a certain age or stage in your life, your doctor may recommend certain tests for cancer. These might include breast, cervical, colorectal, or prostate tests. These screenings are usually fast and painless and may need to be repeated every few years.

Not sure which cancer screenings you need? Your doctor can help answer any questions and discuss any concerns with you.

And More!

There are even more free tests and services you can get under Obamacare, including ones meant specifically for adults, women, and children.

So don’t wait. Make an appointment with your doctor today to get the most out of these benefits for your health!
