Healthfirst returned to the Bronx for its sixth annual Health and Wellness Expo. Find out how this free event brought the community together to take charge of its health.
On Saturday June 15, Healthfirst hosted its sixth annual Health and Wellness Expo in the Bronx. This year the theme—Come Together for Better Health—attracted more than 1,500 local residents for a day full of free health events and fun.
Under sunny skies at the Gouverneur Playground, the Bronx community gathered to learn about disease management, prevention, and lifestyle changes while engaging in family-friendly activities.
More than 30 medical screeners provided free checks of blood pressure, glucose, and Body Mass Index (BMI), as well as mammograms. Local residents also had the opportunity to meet and speak with several community leaders, including Assemblymember Michael Blake, Councilmember Vanessa Gibson, District Leader Cynthia Cox, Councilmember Ruben Diaz, Sr., Director of Claremont Community Center Abraham Jones, Director of North Central Hospital Mrs. Cristina Contreras, Director of Betances Senior Center Angel Paris, and others.
In addition to health and wellness screenings, the Expo Plaza included The Kids’ Zone, with face painting and bouncy castles; The Health & Wellness Zone, offering informative wellness programs; The Get Fit Zone, featuring interactive workouts led by fitness instructors; and The Main Stage, which hosted live entertainment throughout the day, including the Delfonics, Trusol, Mercy Group, and Petawane.
“As it has done in past years, the Health & Wellness Expo provided a community forum to generate awareness, discussion, and action regarding health and wellness,” said Jeff Ross, Healthfirst Community Lead. “The Expo offers health education and exposes people to a wide variety of tools, products, and services that can help them to take the necessary steps to manage common health issues that are preventable if we all work together as a community.”
This annual community event was first conceived of as part of Healthfirst’s Healthy Village initiative in the Bronx and is organized and presented each year in partnership with community organizations such as Claremont Neighborhood Center Inc., Family Medicine, BronxCare Health System, New York City Housing Residents Association, and the William Hodson Senior Center.
